Upgrade your engine to 3S-GTE.

The 5S-FE and 3S-GTE are both Toyota engines. The 5S-FE engine is an in-line, 4-cylinder, 2.2 liter DOHC 16-valve engine. The 3S-GTE is the most powerful Toyota 4-cylinder engine in the 2000cc class. Toyota Celica, Carmry and MR2 models can upgrade their engine from 5S-FE to a 3S-GTE. The 3S-GTE engine can be fit into the vehicles originally installed with 5S-FE powerplant because the two engines have the same dimensions and bolt patterns. The 3S-GTE is a 2.0L turbo, whereas the 5S-FE a 2.2L NA engine. The swap process is not so difficult, but you need to be familiar with the engines.

Instructions

    • 1

Bolt the 3S-GTE to the 5S-FE transmission. Employ the clutch Disc from the 5S-FE transmission and use the Pressure Plate from the 3S-GTE. This is because transmission shaft is different for the two engines.

    • 2

Keep the engine and transmission mounts attached to the 3S-GTE. This will avoid changing belts and causing problems.

    • 3

Keep the rear heater hoses from the 5S-FE. Use the lower radiator hose from the 3S-GTE as it is at a different position from 5S-FE engine.

    • 4

Modify the upper radiator hose by cutting the pipe that resides in the upper radiator hose to a length of 3 to 4 inches. Grab a nipple fitting that matches the turbo outlet and drill and tap it into the pipe. Cut the upper radiator hose by a few inches from the radiator. Insert the pipe into the hose to connect it and clamp the ends

    • 5

Connect the turbo water line to the new fitting in the radiator hose via a hose.
