How to Troubleshoot a Polaroid A801

The Polaroid A801 is categorized as a "Point and Shoot' model. This means it is designed so most people can understand the basic operation. All you need to do to take a photograph is to turn the camera on, point it at something and press the shutter button -- or shoot. The shutter and aperture settings are automatic. The simplistic design also means when the camera fails to perform, troubleshooting may be enough to figure out why.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the camera over so the "Polaroid" label on the LCD points downward if the camera will not run. Press down on the battery door, found on the right side of the camera, with your finger and slide the door away until it pops open. Dump out the batteries and reinstall them. Follow the instructions on the battery compartment door for proper installation.

    • 2

Install new batteries if the old ones are in correctly, but the camera will not work.

    • 3

Open the battery compartment door and insert a SD card in the slot if the LCD indicates "No Memory Available" or if the image does not record. The A801 has limited internal flash memory. An SD card will extend the memory.

    • 4

Push down on the "On/Off" button located on top of the camera if the image does not record or the camera does not work when you push the shutter button. If the camera has been idle, it may have shut down to save power.

    Computer Troubleshooting

    • 5

Unplug the cable from both the computer and the camera, and reinsert it at both ports if your computer does not recognize the connection.

    • 6

Install the camera driver if Windows prompts you it is missing. The operating system will automatically look for an appropriate driver. Follow the instructions in the dialog boxes for locating the driver and installing it.

    • 7

Reinstall the camera driver if the computer reports an error with it. For Windows, open the device driver in the "Control Panel," and locate your camera driver on the device list. Double click on the camera file to open a dialogue box that allows you to reinstall the driver. Follow the onscreen instructions to install the driver.

    • 8

Unplug any other camera you may have connected to your computer. It may be interfering with the functioning of the A801 unit.

Tips & Warnings

  • A driver error can come in many formats. The computer may issue a prompt explaining the device or driver is not working, or refuse to recognize the camera.

  • Even with a point and shoot camera like the Polaroid A801, photography can take some practice. If your images are not coming out the way you would like, spend some time reading the documentation that came with your camera to learn the most effective ways to take pictures.
