How to Make a Hooping Station

Hooping stations are frames which are used to stabilize fabric for several different fabric arts, including quilting, needlework and embroidery. They are especially useful for individuals who suffer from joint pain or arthritis, who may experience pain while holding project still for long periods of time.
According to embroiderysupplies.com, proper fabric tension will help individuals achieve more consistent stitching. Hooping stations are commonly used in commercial settings as well as at-home applications.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and height of your desired work space.

    • 2

Draw an outline of the space measured with the pencil on the MDF. Make a mark at the top of the space measured to indicate the desired width of the hooping neck.

    • 3

Cut the outline of the measured segment in the MDF with the jigsaw. Use the jigsaw to round the corners of the MDF, and cut the center of the board out to match the width of the neck.

    • 4

Sand each of the cut edges with the sandpaper until they are smooth to the touch.

    • 5

Use the protractor to draw a 45 degree angle V shape on a scrap piece of MDF, so that each side is 1 and 1/2 inches long. Cut out the piece with the jigsaw. Repeat until there are two V-shaped pieces of MDF.

    • 6

Draw parallel lines onto the MDF hooping board. Place them 4 inches from each side and an even distance apart.

    • 7

Place the V-shaped pieces of MDF on the drawn lines, pointing downwards and aligning the opposite edge with the top of the board. Drill pilot holes through the V-shaped pieces and the hooping board.

    • 8

Secure the V-shaped pieces with screws, and store the finished station for later use.
