How to Make an Action Wrench
An action wrench is a tool used to clamp around the action of a rifle, when removing the barrel. Making an action wrench can be done by hand, if you have the proper tools and materials. Fabricating the action wrench requires steel or metal, and a drill press. The fabrication of your own action wrench is a project that can be completed in just a few hours.
Things You'll Need
- Two pieces of metal -- 3/4 inch by 1 1/2 inch by 4 inches each
- Tape measure
- Felt tip marker
- Drill press
- 3-inch lag bolts
- Socket wrench
- 1/2-inch threaded metal rod

Measure 1/2 inch from each end on the long edge of one of your metal pieces, using the tape measure. Make two marks on the metal, with the felt tip marker.

Secure the piece of metal, with the marks facing up, onto your drill press. Insert a 1/4-inch metal drill bit into the chuck. Drill a hole through the piece of metal at each mark.

Measure 1/2 inch from each end on the long edge of your second piece of metal. Make two marks on the metal, and then secure it to the drill press. Drill a 1/4-inch hole, 1-inch deep at each mark.

Lay the piece of metal used in Step 3 facedown on the drill press. Make sure that you have the holes in the metal facing away from the drill press.

Mark the edge of the metal at its center, and align the drill bit on the edge. Drill a 1-inch-deep by 1-inch-wide semicircle into the bottom of the metal. Place the piece of metal upside down on the drill press.

Measure the width of the metal and mark the center. Drill a 3/4-inch hole into the side for the handle.

Place your two pieces of metal together with the grooved cut piece on top. Insert the 3-inch log bolts into a hole on each side. Tighten the lag bolts with the socket wrench.

Insert the threaded end of the metal rod into the center hole on the top. Turn this metal rod clockwise to tighten.

Tips & Warnings
Threads can cut into the holes in the metal by using a tap and die set.
