How to Troubleshoot a DG403 Latch

How to Troubleshoot a DG403 Latch thumbnail
RAM modules are held in place by two latches on either side of the DIMM slot.

Motherboards are delicate pieces of machinery, and there is a reason that they have a computer case around them. But installing new hardware, like RAM, for example, is a good way to upgrade an older computer. Unfortunately, the latches on the sides of a DIMM slot can be difficult to work with, and the large amount of force required to insert a RAM module into the DIMM slot can easily break latches. If you believe the DIMM slot was damaged, you can troubleshoot the problem.

Instructions

  1. Breaks and Bends

    • 1

Power off the computer and remove the RAM module from the DIMM slot by pushing down on the two latches.

    • 2

Inspect the latch for cracks or breaks. You can repair such damage with plastic-safe epoxy glue. Just be sure to allow such glue plenty of time to dry.

    • 3

Look for bends in the latch, and make sure that the latch hinge is properly lodged. If the latch has become dislodged, you may be able to put it back in the correct setting. Bent latches, however, may mean that you have to abandon the DIMM slot. If possible, use another free DIMM slot.

    Installation

    • 4

Power off the computer. Make sure either latch is fully back, and take the RAM module in both hands. Pinch the edges of the circuit board portion of the ram, and try not to handle the circuitry on the face of the RAM.

    • 5

Place the RAM module so that it lines up on either side of the DIMM slot with the bump on the latch.

    • 6

Push down gently on either side of the RAM module until the two latches lock in to place. Gently push on each side to confirm that the module is in place. If you have never installed a RAM module before, you may not realize just how much force is required to get the RAM module properly seated.
