How to Separate a CMYK File for Screen Printing

Adobe Illustrator is a graphic industry program used to create custom illustrations for screen printing. The screen printing process is used in print materials as well as T-shirt production and requires that graphics be set to the CMYK color mode and the colors separated. Each color is then individually applied to the print material allowing for the colors to appear rich and accurate.

      Launch Adobe Illustrator.

      Click “File” and “Open.” Browse to the CMYK file and click “Open.”

      Click “File” and “Print.”

    • 4

      Select the printer to print to.

    • 5

      Click “Output” and select “Separations (Host-Based).”

    • 6

      Set the desired print options for the color plates: position, scale, marks and bleeds.

    • 7

      Click “Print.”
