How to Install a 996 Turbo IPD

A plenum is located on top of the air intake manifold under a vehicle's hood, installed to even out the distribution of air to the various cylinders. Aftermarket plenums are popular because modifying the factory-installed plenum is nearly impossible, requiring aluminum welding only a specialist is capable of. The IPD plenum for the Porsche 996 Turbo increases engine horsepower by 30 to 35 -- noticeable primarily from the mid-to-top rpm range. Innovative Pro Design recommends that its IPD turbo plenums be installed by a professional. However, it is possible to install one yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Loosen the three hose clamps around the rubber air inlet tube -- attached between the air box and throttle body -- using a 7-millimeter socket. Remove the tube.

    • 2

Remove the throttle body by unscrewing the four bolts with a 10-millimeter socket. Disconnect the breather vent line at the left side of the existing plenum, by pinching and tugging off the clamp.

    • 3

Remove the check valve from the intake manifold’s rubber boot. Loosen as far as possible the rubber boot hose clamps connecting the plenum to the intake manifold. Slide the boots onto the intake manifold, and remove the existing plenum using a flat-head screwdriver.

    • 4

Place the IPD plenum between the boots with the help of the flat-head screwdriver, then use the screwdriver to help slide the boots onto the plenum. Seat the boots firmly in the plenum and manifold groove. Replace the rubber boot hose clamps.

    • 5

Center the plenum, then half-tighten the hose clamps. Tighten the plenum side first, taking care not to over-tighten. Angle the plenum into a flat or horizontal position, and secure it to the power steering pump housing by screwing a throttle body bolt through the plenum support bracket. Finish tightening all clamps.

    • 6

Reattach the breather line, throttle body and air inlet boot.
