How to Install a 2005 Silverado Front Bumper

Removing the front bumper from the 2005 Chevy Silverado requires removing the front grill assembly and disconnecting the fog lights. The front bumper is secured to the vehicle by four bolts on top of the bumper and one on each side under the vehicle at the bumper support. The removal and installation process does not require special tools.

Instructions

  1. Removal

    • 1

Lift the and support the vehicle hood.

    • 2

Remove the radiator cover secured to the radiator and front grill by gently prying up on the center push pin of all seven plastic clips. Remove the clips from the cover and remove the cover from the vehicle.

    • 3

Remove the four plastic Phillips-head plastic retainers from each corner of the grill face by turning each fastener with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Remove the center bolt securing the front grill to the core support with the socket and ratchet. Firmly hold the grill in the center on each side; the grill is clipped into place at these two points, so pulling anywhere else could damage the grill. Pull the grill straight off the vehicle.

    • 4

Lie down under the vehicle. Remove the bolt that secures the left and right sides of the bumper cover (one bolt on each side) to the bumper support with the socket and ratchet. Unplug the fog light wiring harness from the fog lights if equipped.

    • 5

Remove the four upper mounting bolts on the top of the bumper -- previously hidden by the grill -- with the socket and ratchet. Carefully lift the bumper cover off the vehicle and lie it down on the blanket.

    Installtion

    • 6

Set the bumper cover onto the vehicle and hold it in place. Install each of the four upper mounting bolts and tighten them with the socket and ratchet.

    • 7

Lie down under the vehicle. Connect the bumper cover to the bumper support on each side of the vehicle and tighten the bolt on each side with the socket and ratchet. Plug the fog light wiring harness into the fog light assemblies.

    • 8

Set the front grill into position over the bumper and core support. Secure the four corners of the grill by turning the Phillips-head plastic fasteners with the Phillips-head screwdriver. Install the bolt that secures the grill to the core support and tighten it with the socket and ratchet.

    • 9

Set the radiator in place. Set each of the seven push pin connectors into their mounting holes and firmly press on the center push pin until it sits flush with the plastic retainer. Shut the vehicle hood.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the push pin connectors become damaged during removal, replacements can be purchased at most auto parts stores as well as any Chevy dealership.

  • During installation, the upper mounting bolts must be installed first or the bumper may fall when attaching the bumper to the bumper supports under the vehicle.
