How to Install a Locking Gas Cap on a 2007 Ford Mustang
Installing a locking gas cap on a 2007 Ford Mustang will add a layer of security when attempting to safeguard the vehicle's fuel from thieves and vandals. A locking gas cap requires the owner to use a specially matched key to remove the cap from the filler neck before fueling. Although determined criminals may have the ability to bypass a locking gas cap when attempting to steal fuel from a vehicle, installing such a device can serve as a deterrent.
Instructions
-
-
1
Turn off the vehicle and open the fuel door.
-
2
Pry off the small round plastic connector that secures the gas cap lanyard to the rear of the fuel door, using a large flat-head screwdriver.
-
-
3
Remove the original gas cap from the fuel filler neck opening.
-
4
Examine the new locking gas cap. If the existing lanyard is considerably shorter than the original gas cap lanyard, consider removing the old lanyard and installing it on the locking gas cap to avoid installation issues. The lanyard features a large rubber ring that installs around a grooved portion of the cap.
-
5
Heat the large attachment ring for the lanyard with a hair dryer if you have trouble removing the lanyard from either gas cap. The heat will expand and soften the rubber ring. Install the original gas cap lanyard on the locking cap, if applicable.
-
6
Secure the small looped portion of the lanyard to the rear of the fuel door, using the original press-fit connector.
-
7
Insert one of the supplied keys into the locking gas cap and secure the cap to the fuel filler neck. Refer to the instructions supplied with the gas cap for the proper locking and unlocking procedure.
-
8
Avoid turning the gas cap while using the key; always secure and remove the cap by using the appropriate “dialed” finger grip. Attach one of the gas cap keys to your vehicle's key ring and keep the spare in a safe location.
