How to Record With a Webcam EyeToy

The EyeToy is compatible with a variety of webcam recording software.

While the Sony PlayStation 2 EyeToy allows you to map your face onto a game character in your favorite PS2 game, the device can also be used as a webcam on your PC. The EyeToy, however, doesn’t include swebcam software, which is needed for recording your live image. To record a webcam video, download and install a third-party application such as Windows Live Movie Maker, Camersoft Webcam Capture or Debut Video Capture Software.

Instructions

Using Windows Live Movie Maker

1. Download and install Windows Live Movie Maker (explore.live.com/windows-live-movie-maker).

2. Open Windows Live Movie Maker.

3. Click the “Webcam Video” button in the “Home” toolbar. The “Windows Live Movie Maker Options” window will open, and you will be asked to select your audio and webcam devices.

4. Click the “Available Audio Devices” drop-down menu and select your PC’s internal or external microphone. After selecting a mic, click the “Available Webcams” drop-down menu and select the EyeToy. Click “OK.” Your live webcam image will appear on the screen.

5. Click the “Record” button to begin recording your webcam video.

6. Click the “Stop” button to cease recording.

Using Camersoft Webcam Capture

1. Download and install Camersoft Webcam Capture (camersoft.com/webcam-capture.html).

2. Launch Camersoft Webcam Capture.

3. Click the webcam icon in the upper left corner of the screen. Select the EyeToy from the “Please select webcam source” drop-down menu and click “OK.” Your live webcam image will be displayed.

4. Click the “Start Record Webcam” button on the main toolbar. The software will begin recording your live image.

5. Click the “Stop” button when you’re finished recording.

Using Debut Video Capture Software

1. Download and install Debut Video Capture Software (nchsoftware.com/capture/index.html). As of time of publication, the software costs approximately $40. The company, however, offers a free evaluation version.

2. Open Debut Video Capture Software.

3. Click the “File” tab and select “Options.” The “Options” dialog box will appear. Click the “Devices” tab and select the EyeToy device from the “Name” drop-down menu. After selecting the device, click “OK.” Your webcam image will appear.

4. Click the “Record” button in the bottom left corner of the screen.

5. Click the “Stop” button when you’re finished recording your video.
