How to Replace an Oil Burner in Virginia
Replacing oil burners constitutes changing two major parts: a nozzle that sprays oil for flame combustion; and a filter that keeps foreign particles including water, dirt or sludge from being pumped to the nozzle. Prolonged use of these components can weaken the performance of the system you use to heat your home doing cold Virginia seasons.

- Oil burner instruction manual
- Screwdriver
- End wrenches (3/4- and 5/8-inch)

1
Find the emergency cutoff switch on your oil burner and turn it off. It is usually marked in red and located at the basement or its entrance.
-
2
Refer to the operation manual to locate your oil burner components. Locate the shutoff valve and use the end wrench to shut it, turning in a clockwise direction until it completely tightens, or "seats." Locate the top of the transformer lid. Use a screwdriver to loosen and remove screws. Lift the lid off the transformer box and allow it to hinge toward the back.

3
Locate the copper oil inlet that directs into the transformer housing. Place a drain pan under the exterior retaining nut and loosen the nut with an end wrench. The drain pan will catch oil drippings. Loosen the interior retaining nut with an end wrench.
-
4
Push the outer oil line with your fingers so that it shifts slightly back. Pull away the inner oil line from its connection hole to display the nozzle housing. Use an end wrench to remove the nut that secures the nozzle housing in place. Lift the nozzle housing from the transformer box.
-
5
Examine the brass-like plug that joins to the larger joint; this is the filter nozzle. Place one end wrench on the end of the filter nozzle and the other on the larger nut at the joint. Seize the nut at the joint firmly and turn the filter nozzle nut in a counterclockwise direction to remove the old filter nozzle. Discard the old filter nozzle.
-
6
Hand-screw your replacement filter nozzle back on its fittings. Hold the larger nut with an end wrench and tighten the nozzle nut, turning it in a clockwise direction with your second end wrench.
-
7
Replace the nozzle housing to the transformer box. Tighten the nuts that hold it in place with your end wrench. Push the oil line to pass it through the hole into the transformer box.
-
8
Attach the exterior inlet oil line to the interior oil line flange. Tighten the retaining nuts with your wrench. Replace the lid over the transformer box. Fit the lid screws into the holes and tighten them using a screwdriver.
-
9
Remove the nozzle line assembly from the burner. The nozzle is often located at the end of the burner gun; you may have to use your operation manual to locate it. Also, ensure that you have the right replacement nozzle. Check that it is of the same capacity and spray angle as specified in your manufacturer’s manual.
-
10
Unscrew the old nozzle using your end wrench. Discard and screw the replacement nozzle back to the burner gun.
