How to Repair a Minitube of America Temperature Control Box

A Minitube of America temperature control box is electronic equipment that resembles a portable ice chest, or a cooler, used for preserving animal reproduction specimens, such as semen. The device functions like a refrigerator given that it provides the desired temperature fit for safe storage independent from that outside the box. It can occasionally breakdown, calling for repair.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on your rubber gloves and apron. Refer to the manufacturer’s instruction manual to familiarize yourself with the equipment’s parts, operation and troubleshooting tips. The problem may come from improper operation of the equipment. The appliance is manufacturer’s specific -- supplied specifically by Minitube International -- and may require orientating yourself fully with the equipment.

    • 2

Inspect the temperature control box's power cord to confirm that it is properly plugged in. Plug it off and back into your grounded three-prong power outlet. Turn it on to see whether it works. Also, check whether there are any power lines disconnected or whether the voltage is at the terminals within the allowed range.

    • 3

Turn on the temperature control box. Adjust the temperature controls to a point cold enough to cool the water inside the unit. Place your hand inside the box to determine whether it loses heat. Locate the thermostat and turn it up slightly.

    • 4

Move your equipment away from the wall. Turn down the thermostat and examine whether the inside of the box is cooling. If it doesn’t cool, this may mean that the condenser fan motor malfunctions. Examine wire connections to the condenser fan motor to establish whether they could have burned up or become loose due to vibration. This may cause the seals inside the condenser to melt. Wrap them up with an electric or insulating tape.

    • 5

Turn off the power to the unit. Use a screwdriver to unscrew the cover panel off the unit. Disconnect the corresponding wires and label them appropriately so as to allow easy reinstallation. Wrap the bare wires with electric tape. Connect back the wires and replace the cover. Turn the power back on to see confirm whether the equipment works.

Remove the access panel that covers the evaporator coils inside the freezer compartment. Check whether the coils are frosted. This may mean that the defrosting system is not working properly. Turn off the equipment to allow it to defrost. If the problem persists, then you may have to hire a technician to fix the defrosting system.
