How to Troubleshoot a Rheem Attic Unit

When a Rheem furnace is installed in an attic, the space around the furnace must be kept clear of insulation or other material to help prevent air flow obstruction or overheating of the insulation material, which could create a fire. Other issues with the furnace operation, such as proper heating or loud noises, can often be resolved through some troubleshooting efforts by the homeowner. Contact Rheem for assistance if you are not comfortable inspecting, cleaning or making adjustments to the furnace. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Move the main power switch on the Rheem furnace to “On” if the furnace is not operating even when the thermostat is set to “Heat” and the temperature set above the current air temperature. Reset or replace the fuse or circuit breaker if needed.

    • 2

Turn the thermostat up if the furnace is on, the pilot light is lit and the thermostat is at “Heat” but the furnace is not putting out hot air.

    • 3

Restart the furnace if a power failure occurs and causes the pilot light to extinguish. Smell carefully for gas before you begin and stop immediately if you detect gas. Turn off the furnace and leave the house before calling the gas company. Turn the gas control knob to “Off” and wait five minutes, smelling carefully for gas again. Turn the gas control knob to “On” and turn the furnace back on.

    • 4

Open the access panel and push in on the filter clips to release the filter to clean if the heat from the furnace seems inaccurate or there is a rumbling sound when the furnace is working. Wash the filter with warm, soapy water if the filter is a permanent filter or replace if the filter is disposable. Reset the filter firmly in the clips inside the filter housing once thoroughly dry and close the access panel.

    • 5

Keep return and air supply grilles free of obstruction if the furnace is running properly and the filter is clean but the home does not seem to be heating as expected. Make sure each vent is open and do not place furniture or other objects in front of or on top of the vents.
