How to Set Up a Zone Forwarder for an External Website

Web browsers can access a website using an Internet protocol address or a domain name. You can change the IP address assigned to a domain or subdomain to redirect the site to an external website. CPanel, a software application Web hosts provide to allow domain owners to configure and manage their websites, features a simple-to-use interface for editing the domain name system zone file, a text file that stores information about the mapping of domain names to IP addresses.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert <domain>/cpanel into the address bar, then press "Enter" to go to cPanel. Replace <domain> with the URL for your domain.

    • 2

Scroll to "Domains," then click "Advanced DNS Zone Editor." Scroll to the file records, found at the bottom of the page.

    • 3

Locate the appropriate domain or subdomain, then click "Edit." Enter the IP address for the external website into the Address field.

    • 4

Click "Edit Record" to forward the subdomain to the external website.

Tips & Warnings

  • It may take several hours to several days for your Web host to redirect your domain or subdomain to the external website.

  • Use Whois to look up the IP address for the external website, if necessary.

  • If you don't know your cPanel login, contact your Web host for further assistance.
