How to Sync a Mozilla Firefox Calendar With Multiple Computers

Recording an appointment on your laptop won't help you remember it on your smartphone unless the two calendars are synced. If you use Mozilla's Sunbird for your calendar programs, you can sync it on with multiple computers by hooking up Sunbird to Google Calendars with Google's CalDAV protocol. To use CalDAV, you need Sunbird 0.8 or higher. If your computer or other devices aren't compatible with CalDAV, use Google Sync instead. CalDAV also syncs Apple's iCalendar and Mozilla's Lightning calendar software across different platforms.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect your Sunbird calendar to Google Calendars. Open Sunbird, select "New Calendar" in the "File" menu, then select "On the Net" and click "Next." Select "CalDAV" as the format option and enter your email when Sunbird asks for your location.

Set up your computers, smartphones, iPads and other devices to sync with Google Calendars. Do this with CalDAV for Apple computers and other Apple devices, based on Google's online instructions at Google.com. Use Google Sync if you're working with a Blackberry, Windows Mobile or most non-Apple cell phones (see Resources).

    • 3

Open the calendar app on your computer once you've set up your electronics to sync. Your calendar syncs with Google automatically.

Tips & Warnings

  • If only some of your computers accept CalDAV, use both CalDAV and Google Sync simultaneously to sync your calendar updates with different platforms.

  • If you have your own Web server, you can install webDAV to set up a shared calendar on the server. Your employees or family have the option to add their own updates to the same calendar so that all of you know each other's schedules.

  • Update your Sunbird calendar by adding, changing or canceling an event or a to-do item. Sunbird conveys the changes to Google Calendar automatically. Google Calendar syncs, in turn, with your other computer platforms to share whatever new information -- dates, birthdays, canceled events and so on -- you add to Sunbird.

  • Google Calendar generates popup, email and text-message reminders about events. Sunbird only generates popup alerts. If you sync Sunbird through Google Calendar, Google Calendar can only generates popups, not email reminders, for Sunbird events.

  • Google states that CalDAV and Google Sync have only limited tech help available.
