How to Make a Motion Sensor Light String

How to Make a Motion Sensor Light String thumbnail
Use a motion-sensing outlet to trigger a light string.

Motion sensors employ passive infrared (PIR) technology. When movement occurs in the detection range of the sensor, it completes an electrical circuit that triggers an electrical appliance connected to the sensor. Motion sensors are built into some appliances such as outdoor lighting. However, you can create your own motion sensor for things such as a light string using a readily available motion-sensing outlet plug. You can buy them at hardware stores, home improvement centers and discount retailers. You may even find them in larger supermarkets. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Check to make sure the motion-sensing outlet is turned off. Plug it into a regular electrical outlet. Check the label of the motion-sensing outlet for the range of detection. Ensure the detection range covers the area where you want movement to trigger the light string.

    • 2

Connect a heavy-duty extension cord to the regular outlet and run the cord to the detection area if the regular outlet is not near your desired detection range. Plug the motion-sensing outlet into the extension cord. Many motion-sensing outlets require a grounded plug, so make sure your extension cord is grounded. A grounded extension cord has three prongs instead of two.

    • 3

Plug a string of lights firmly into the motion-sensing outlet. Turn the motion-sensing outlet on. Test the setup by waving your hand around in front of the motion sensor. If the lights come on, everything is set up correctly. Turn the sensor off again.

    • 4

Hang the light string where you want it. If you put the lights outdoors, protect the motion-sensing outlet and extension cord from moisture. You can use plastic and waterproof tape to wrap the equipment, but do not obscure the motion-sensing component. Turn the motion-sensing outlet on again and test it once more to make sure it is set up correctly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use motion-sensor-activated light strings for Halloween or other holiday decorations to save energy costs.

  • You can find motion-sensing power strips for multiple strings of lights.

  • Light strings mounted along the ceiling or baseboards can provide charming ambient room lighting.

  • Motion-sensing outlets are also excellent for saving energy on household lighting, computer monitors and other electrical appliances.
