How to Find the Sidebar in the Tumblr Code

If your Tumblr blog uses the default "Redux" theme, it has a sidebar on the right side of the page that displays content such as your picture, a search field and a button that allows Tumblr members to follow your blog. You can add custom text or HTML code to the sidebar using the "Description area on Tumblr's blog customization page, or you can edit the sidebar code directly by accessing the source code for the "Redux" theme.

Instructions

    • 1

Enter your email address and password at the Tumblr.com login page to display the main menu for your account. The top navigation menu displays the titles of the blogs you've generated or have the ability to post on.

    • 2

Click "Customize Appearance" above the "Settings" button on the right navigation bar. This brings you to a new page titled "Customize." The left side of the page displays a list of items that you can change to adjust your blog's appearance, while the right side displays a preview of what your blog will look like after implementing the changes you make.

    • 3

Enter text or HTML code in the "Description" field on the left side of the page to add content to your Tumblr blog's sidebar without modifying any of the existing content. To access your blog's source code and modify the existing sidebar content, continue.

    • 4

Click the "Edit HTML" button above the "Description" field. The existing items on the menu bar disappear, and the left section of the window expands to display your blog's source code. To help you avoid losing your place, every line of code is numbered. The right side of the window continues to function as a preview area.

    • 5

Scroll down to "#wrapper #sidebar" beginning on line 515 of the source code. The sidebar code ends on line 782. Modify these lines of code to change aspects of the sidebar, such as its font, color and size.

    • 6

Click the "Update Preview" button at the top of the menu bar to see what your blog will look like after you publish changes made to the source code. Then click the "Appearance" button to close the source code and return to the main menu.

    • 7

Click the "Save" button to publish the changes. Then click the "Close" button to return to the Tumblr Dashboard.
