How to Erase an AIM Chat Log

AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) stores logs of your chat conversations if you have the program set up to do that. Chat logs are disabled by default, but can be enabled for buddies or chat rooms from the Settings window. Chat logs are only saved on your computer and not stored on AOL’s servers. You can erase chat logs from your computer by deleting them.

Instructions

    • 1

Click “Options” in the top-right corner of your AIM buddy list window and then select “Settings.”

    • 2

Click the “IM Logs” tab on the left side of the window that appears.

    • 3

Click “View Logs." A folder window containing your AIM chat logs appears.

    • 4

Select the chat log you want to erase. For example, to erase the log of chats between you and a buddy named “Example,” click the “example.html” file.

    • 5

Press “Delete” on your keyboard to send the chat log to the Recycle Bin.

    • 6

Right-click “Recycle Bin” on your desktop and then click “Empty Recycle Bin” to erase all of the files in the Recycle Bin, including the chat log.

Tips & Warnings

  • Disable chat logging by clearing the Log My IM Conversations or Log My Chat Conversations check boxes within the IM Logs tab.
