Folders help you easily manage the files on your computer.

Your computer holds a lot of information. The average person may have a collection of documents, music, pictures and video files. Not only is it helpful to divide computer content by file type, it is also useful to organize it by subject matter. Folders allow for several layers of organization, because of the ability to create subfolders -- folders within the main one that further divide your content, making things easier to locate when you need them.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the "Start" icon on the bottom-left of your computer. The icon looks like the Windows logo. Click on "Computer" from the menu on the right.

    • 2

Double-click on the "C" drive to locate the folder in which you want to create a subfolder. Alternatively, click on one of the shortcuts from the menu in the left column. Your options include Desktop, Documents, Music, Pictures and Videos. Using the shortcuts can save time, if you know the folder is in one of those locations.

    • 3

Double-click the folder in which you want to create a subfolder. This action opens the main folder so you can see which subfolders already exist, if any.

    • 4

Choose “New Folder” from the menu in the blue bar across the top. A new folder is created -- with a white box next to it, where you can type in a folder name. By default, the box is titled "new folder."
