A plain white camisole is a blank canvas for distressing.

The distressed clothing look is something fashion designers seem enamored of. Distressed jeans and denim garments look old and worn, but are making appearances on the runway, in Hollywood and in magazines. Denim isn't the only material that can be impressive while distressed. You can add a funky, edgy look by distressing an ordinary white tank top and you don't have to pay designer prices when you do it yourself. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Stretch the tank top fabric out with your hands, pulling on the top in opposite directions. The starting point for distressing clothing is to make it look worn. A new tank top, or one that is still in pristine condition, may look more fitted and shapely. Stretching it out starts off the distressed appearance.

    • 2

Lay the tank top in the sun for one or two days. Sun exposure yellows white fabric over time, which makes your white tank top look aged.

    • 3

Spray paint an image or design -- such as a rock band, a phrase or a symbol -- onto the tank top using a spray paint template. Set the template onto the part of the tank top where you want the image and spray the open sections of the template, being sure to not get the spray paint onto other parts of the tank top.

    • 4

Position a pair of scissors at the bottom of the tank top. Make three or four 1-inch vertical cuts up into the tank top along the bottom. Throw the tank top into the electric dryer and let it tumble for 30 minutes. When you take the tank top out, the areas where the cuts were will look slightly frayed.
