How to Convert Tuba Music to Trumpet Music

Use staff paper to write down the transposed music.

Music for the tuba and trumpet are written in different keys and different octaves, so you can’t just pick up a sheet of music and play it on your trumpet. Instead, use your transposition skills to rewrite that piece in your instrument’s key and range. Invest a little time to transpose the music and you’ll be playing that great tuba concerto or the tuba part in any brass quintet in no time.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the keys of your instruments. Most trumpet players have B-flat horns, but horns are available in nearly every key. Tuba music is usually written in the key of C, so you will need to know what key you have to transpose to for your particular trumpet.

    • 2

Transpose all notes in the music up a major second for B-flat trumpets. To do this, increase each note by a whole step.

    • 3

Transpose the key signature up a major second as well. A piece that was written in F for the tuba should be altered to G for the trumpet. You’ll need to alter the sharps and flats on notes throughout the piece according to the new key signature.

    • 4

Raise the whole piece by at least one octave to make it playable in the trumpet range. Check that the lowest note in the piece is something you can play on the trumpet; if not, raise the piece by another octave. Raising a piece by one octave may be sufficient for some players and not for others, so take into account your own playing range when transposing for just yourself and the range of the average trumpet player when transposing for your band or another group.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a pencil and staff paper to write out transposed songs if you are unable to transpose in your head. Alternately, enter the transposed song into a music writing program and print a copy for more legible sheet music.
