A maroon quilt is a deep bold color for a bedroom. You can use the quilt to cover the bed, hang it on the wall as a piece of art or incorporate it into a headboard. Darker colors on the walls make for a warm and cozy room, so the quilt will fit into this color scheme well. Accent the room with light-colored curtains, pillows, art and accessories that pick up the dark color of the quilt and yet gives the room an open look. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Using the Maroon Quilt as the Bedspread

    • 1

Pick your favorite colors for the bedroom. Take the maroon quilt with you to the paint store and place these colors against it so that you can determine if they complement each other and will not overwhelm the quilt.

    • 2

Prepare the walls. Fill all holes in the wall with drywall putty and allow them to dry. Sand them smooth so that when the primer is painted over the putty, there is no evidence that there was ever a hole to fill. Allow the primer to dry and then paint the room. Try painting one wall with an accent color that is deeper and richer than the other walls of the room. For instance, with a maroon quilt, paint the wall behind the bed a deep forest green and the other walls either a lighter green or purple to augment the color of the quilt.

    • 3

Place the bed against the wall, make it up with crisp sheets, and add throw pillows and other accessories on various pieces of furniture scattered around the room. Depending on the size of the bedroom, add a chair in a contrasting color that matches the accent wall, some light wood-colored nightstands, and lamps with bright shades to offset the darkness of the quilt and the walls. Toss a couple of throws and pillows on the bed and chairs, and the room is a cozy retreat.

    Wall Hanging

    • 4

Create wall art with the maroon quilt. This is most effective when the quilt has a pattern on it so that it is not just a single color.

    • 5

Turn the top edge of the quilt down 2 inches, and sew a casing for the dowel. Repeat and sew a casing along the bottom edge of the quilt. Feed the dowels through the casings and sew the bottom casing closed. Tie one end of the braided rope to the dowel and stretch it across the top of the quilt. Add 3 to 5 inches to the rope and tie the other end tightly to the dowel.

    • 6

Hang the quilt on the hooks along the accent wall behind the bed placement. The quilt then becomes an art object and centerpiece of the room, contrasting with the wall and “popping” when you walk into the room.
