How to Display PNG Files for Android

Despite its multiple options for image viewing and exporting, some Android cell phones have difficulty opening PNG files. According to the Indiana University website, Portable Network Graphics files were developed as a replacement for the standard GIF format. Although PNG and GIF files are similar in size, PNG images offer support for indexed colors, 2-D progressive rendering and lossless compression. If you're unable to view a PNG file on your Android, or experience visibly reduced quality, try applying the Photoshop Add Noise setting on your image viewing software.

Instructions

    • 1

Enter the programs screen and select the Eclipse program from the list of installed applications. Select "Browse" and locate the name of your PNG image file. Hold your finger on the screen over your file until the file options screen appears. Select the menu option and enable non-lossy image compression.

Open the image file and select the settings tab. Locate the "Photoshop Add Noise" option and double-click it to enable it. Close the image and try reopening it.

    • 3

Download or drag your PNG image file into the res/drawable folder relative to your image viewing software. For example, if the image is in your Downloads folder, click and drag it to the program folder for your image software. Locate the file and rename it to a file extension that is easy to locate, such as pic1.png.

Enter your image viewing software and select the "Open" option. Locate your PNG file in the drop-down menu and select it. Select the "View Image" option on the pop-up window to view your PNG file.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're having difficulty viewing a PNG file in your e-mail, transferring the file to the folder of your image viewing software should solve the problem. If you're still unable to access the PNG file, try opening it on a PC to make sure that the file isn’t corrupt. If all else fails, contact the Google Android help desk or call a representative.
