How to Build an Acoustic Horn

When discussing audio, an "acoustic horn" is referred to as an audio device that guides audio from its source to open air. The horn is shaped like a cone through which audio enters the small end and exits the large end, greatly amplified. If you wish to build your own acoustic horn for either a small audio device or for you to speak directly into, you can do so with a handful of household items.

Instructions

    • 1

Roll your posterboard into a cone shape. Try to roll the paper in such a way that one end of the cone is as wide as possible, and the other end is as small as possible. Make sure there are no cracks in the cone.

    • 2

Cut away any parts of the cone that taper on the wide end of the cone. This will ensure that the wide end is as flat as possible.

    • 3

Cut away the edges of the small end until it will fit over the audio output device. Examples of such a device include a small speaker or your mouth.

    • 4

Apply tape to the cone's seam to secure its shape.

    • 5

Test the horn by transmitting audio through it. The audio should be amplified as it comes out of the wide end of the cone.
