How to Enter an International Number Using Yahoo Chat and Mobile Text

With Yahoo Chat, you can send international texts via PC.

Yahoo Chat lets you send text messages to mobile phones directly from your computer. Certain geographic regions do not support this service, but many do. If you want to send an international text message through Yahoo Chat, the process takes just a few minutes. Yahoo Chat’s texting service is completely free for the sender, even for international messages, but the recipient is subject to cellphone service fees and may need to download Yahoo Mobile Messenger.

Instructions

1. Log into your Yahoo Mail account.

2. Click on the drop-down box in the “Chat and Mobile Text” area.

3. Click “Available.” This signs you into the Yahoo Chat system.

4. Click to expand the “Mobile Contacts” section of your Yahoo Chat window.

5. Click on a person’s name if available. Skip to Step 7 if a connection starts without your having to enter a number.

6. Enter the international number, starting with the “plus” symbol and the country code. Without the country code, an international number isn’t recognized by Yahoo Chat. Country code listings are found online or by calling your telephone service provider. Enter the area code and number after the country code, omitting any zeros at the beginning of the area code.

7. Type your message in the blank text box. The maximum length for Yahoo Chat text messages is 149 characters. The number of characters remaining appears at the top of the text box as you type.

8. Click “Send.” The message is sent to the specified number or person from your contacts. The international text message is sent to the mobile device, and if the recipient replies, the message appears in your Yahoo Chat field.

9. Click on the drop-down box in “Chat and Mobile Text” area again, and select “Offline” when finished. Your Yahoo Chat session ends.

Tips & Warnings

• If this is your first time using Yahoo’s mobile texting functionality, a drop-down menu appears when you try to send the text. The menu asks you to select your country. Click to select the country you live in, regardless of what country you are sending the text to.
