How to Change the Thrust Washer on a Maytag Model SAV205
The thrust washer on the Maytag model SAV205 acts as a bearing on the agitator shaft. It is easier and more economical to replace a flat thrust washer than it would be to replace rolling bearings. Making the repair requires taking the gear case out of the appliance in order to replace the thrust washer. Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet. Pull the Maytag washer away from the wall. Turn off the water supply valves. Disconnect the hoses from the washing machine.

Disconnect the drain hose from the back of the washer using a pair of channel-lock pliers to release the hose clamp. Open the washing machine, and remove the rinse dispenser if one is present by pulling it off the agitator.

Pry the cap from the agitator using a flat-tip screwdriver. Remove the bolt and washer from inside the agitator using a socket and ratchet. Pull the agitator out of the washing machine.

Spread a blanket on the floor and tilt the washing machine back so that it is lying on the floor on the blanket. Release the retaining clamps from the drain pump using a flat-tip screwdriver. Pull the pump from the motor shaft, and push it aside.

Remove the retaining bolts from the gear case using a socket and ratchet. Disconnect the wiring harness from the motor and pull the gear case assembly out of the bottom of the Maytag washer. Slide the thrust washer off the shaft.

Slide the new thrust washer on the shaft. Reinstall the gear case/motor assembly into the bottom of the appliance. Install the gear case bolts using a socket and ratchet. Plug the wiring harness into the motor.

Place the pump on the motor shaft. Install the pump retaining clips. Stand the appliance upright. Place the agitator on the shaft, and install the bolt and washer using a socket and ratchet. Place the cap on the agitator, and push on it firmly.

Place the rinse dispenser on the agitator if one is present. Connect the drain hose to the washer. Secure the clamp using a pair of channel-lock pliers. Connect the water supply hoses. Turn on the valves.

Plug the electrical cord into the outlet, and push the washer against the wall.

Inspect the clutch for wear while you have the unit apart, and replace it if necessary.
Never attempt to service a Maytag washer when it still has power to it.
