How to Check a Bad Pressure Regulator in a Water Heater

How to Check a Bad Pressure Regulator in a Water Heater thumbnail
All water heaters come with a temperature and pressure valve.

The temperature and pressure relief valve on your water heater is in place for safety reasons. If too much pressure builds within the tank, the valve will open and allow the pressure to escape. If the temperature becomes too hot, the valve opens to allow for cooler water. A bad valve is a safety concern. Anyone can test the valve by simply lifting a lever and opening the valve. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the temperature and pressure relief valve. A small handle on either the top or side of the hot water tank indicates the valve. The lever will be attached to a tube.

    • 2

Put on your safety glasses. Pull the handle up with your index finger and thumb. Listen for the valve to open and water to flow through the pipe. If the valve did not open or you could not lift the handle, it’s broken and needs replaced.

    • 3

Release the handle and allow it to fall back to its original position. The water should stop flowing immediately after you release the lever. If it does not, pull the handle up again and allow it to fall back into position. Don’t ease the handle down; just release it. If water continues to flow or leaks from the valve, shut off the water and replace the valve as soon as possible.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid holding your face close to the valve. Hot water may shoot out and burn your skin if you do, especially if your hot water tank is older.
