How to Convert GE Front Loader Gas Dryer to Propane

David Clair

GE front load gas dryers are manufactured in a wide range of models. Each model has a distinct set of features and design elements, though all GE gas dryers are designed to utilize natural gas to provide heat. The gas burner assembly can be modified to utilize liquified petroleum, or LP gas as an alternative heat source. LP gas is also known as propane. If your GE front load gas dryer did not come with a conversion kit, a kit can be obtained from appliance parts companies.

Step 1

Unplug the dryer power cord. Turn off the gas valve that leads to the GE dryer.

Step 2

Remove the three screws that connect the control panel to the cabinet. Remove the two screws in the back of the top panel.

Step 3

Lift the top panel up and toward the front of the dryer to disconnect it.

Step 4

Unplug the ribbon cable leading to the control panel. Remove the two screws at the top of the control panel. Lift the control panel off the dryer.

Step 5

Unplug the door switch electrical harness. Remove the two screws at the top of the front panel. Lift the front panel up and away from the dryer to remove it.

Step 6

Remove the two screws holding the metal bracket in place in front of the drum. Lift the bracket off.

Step 7

Move the idler pulley toward the left under the drum. Lift the drum out of the GE dryer.

Step 8

Unscrew the plug on the gas valve. Install the new plug in its place. The valve is located on the gas burner assembly on the left side of the dryer cabinet.

Step 9

Unscrew the brass orifice metering plug on the top of the gas burner. Install the new metering plug from the conversion kit in its place.
