How to Enable SSH on an Apple TV

The Apple TV is a product designed to allow users to view movies or television programs obtained through the iTunes Store on a home television. The device connects to networks via a wireless or Ethernet connection and can access files stored in a home computer's iTunes library. With the help of special software, users can take advantage of this connectivity to log in to the Apple TV using the "Secure Shell," or "SSH," network protocol. This allows for greater flexibility in transferring files to and from the Apple TV.

Instructions

    • 1

Download "atvusb-creator" from the application's home page. This program will modify a USB flash drive or external hard drive, allowing you to boot your Apple TV from the device. It will also copy over the software required for enabling SSH on the Apple TV.

    • 2

Connect the USB flash drive or external hard drive to your computer and launch the "atvusb-creator" application. Select "ATV-Patchstick" from the "Choose an installation" drop-down menu.

    • 3

Check the installation option labeled "SSH tools" and remove the checkmarks from the remaining items. Select your USB flash drive or external hard drive from the "USB Target Device" drop-down menu.

    • 4

Click on the button labeled "Create Using ->" and wait for the installer to load the software onto the connected device. Exit the application and remove the device from your computer.

    • 5

Disconnect the power cord from the rear panel of the Apple TV. Connect the USB flash drive or external hard drive to the USB port located to the right of the power port.

    • 6

Plug the power cord back into the Apple TV; the device will turn on and begin to run the installer application automatically. Disconnect the power cord when prompted. Disconnect the USB flash drive or external hard drive, then reconnect the Apple TV's power cord.

    • 7

Press the "Menu" button on the remote, then use the "+" and "-" buttons to select the option labeled "Settings." Press the button located between the "+" and "-" buttons to confirm your selection.

    • 8

Select "General," followed by "Network." Write down the IP address for the Apple TV.

    • 9

Open the "Terminal" application or any other command line program capable of establishing a SSH connection. Input "ssh frontrow@" followed by the Apple TV's IP address, with no spaces between. Immediately after the IP address, type ":/System/CoreServices/boot.efi." For example, if the device's IP address is 127.0.0.1, type "ssh frontrow@127.0.0.1:/System/CoreServices/boot.efi."
