How to Fix Laptop Parameters
The basic input/output system controls the hardware configuration on a laptop computer. The BIOS stores these settings to a chip on the system board called the complementary metal-oxide semiconductor. You can change the settings stored to the CMOS from the BIOS program, but novice users sometimes make random changes to the hardware parameters, often rendering the computer unstable. BIOS programs provide an option to reset the parameters to fail-safe defaults.

Restart or power on the laptop. Press the "Pause Break" key to freeze the screen when the boot logo appears.

Check the screen for the message "Press <Key> to Enter Setup" or "Press <Key> to Go to Setup Utility." Press "Pause Break" to unfreeze the screen. Follow the on-screen instructions to access the setup utility. Use the directional keys to navigate the main menu.

Scroll to "Load Fail-Safe Defaults" or "Load BIOS Defaults," then press "Enter." If neither options is available, select "Exit" from the menu. Press "Enter" to open the menu.

Check the side or bottom of the screen for "<Key>: Fail-Safe Defaults" or "<Key>: Setup Defaults." Most computers use either the F5, F7 or F9 keys to reset the BIOS to default. Press the associated key to revert the BIOS to a predefined configuration.

Press "Y." Press "F10" or scroll to "Save Changes and Exit," then press "Enter." Press "Y" or highlight "Yes." Press "Enter" to fix the laptop parameters and restart the computer.
