How to Fit & Adjust Sturmey-Archer Hubs
Sturmey-Archer is an England-based company that manufactures bicycle parts, such as sprockets and gears. The company, which was originally formed in 1902 under the guidance of Raleigh Bicycle Company owner Frank Bowden, may be best known for manufacturing three-speed internal gear hubs. These internal hubs, which do not use sprocket clusters and derailleur systems like modern multispeed bicycles, were effective at allowing bicyclists climb sharp hills with little effort. If the hub wears out, a new one has to be fitted and adjusted.
Instructions

Fitting
-
1
Flip the bicycle over so that it rests on its seat and handlebars. Unscrew by hand the gear cable attached to the right sprocket.
-
2
Loosen the wheel bolts with a socket set and slip the chain off the sprocket of the old hub.
-
-
3
Slide the wheel off the back frame.
-
4
Use an Allen wrench to remove the nut holding the old internal hub in place. After it's removed, slip the old hub gear out through the right hand side of the wheel.
-
5
Position the new Sturmey-Archer hub so that it rests equal with the frame hole. Carefully slide the hub into the frame.
-
6
Position the end of the internal hub slightly to the right and insert the hex retaining nuts. Tighten these nuts with the Allen wrench.
-
7
Put the wheel on the back of the frame and slip the chain over the internal hub's sprocket. Replace the wheel retaining bolts and then tighten them with the socket set.
-
8
Screw the gear cable end into the right hub end.
Adjusting
-
9
Loosen the cone lock nut on the left hand side of the sprocket with the socket set.
-
10
Twist the left hand cone slightly back and forth until a little side play can be felt near the rim.
-
11
Loosen the right hand cone lock nut slightly with the socket set and then pop the right cone lock washer loose with the tip of a screwdriver.
-
12
Screw down the right hand cone tightly and then back it off a half turn with the socket set.
-
13
Slip the right lock cone washer back into place. Tighten the left cone lock nut with the socket set.
