How to Convert a Shoe Line File to a Shape Polygon File
To convert a file containing a line drawing of a shoe to a file containing polygon shapes, use the tracing tools of a vector graphics program like Inkscape, Illustrator or Google Docs' drawing program. Once you've created shapes from your line drawing, you can fill them with color. Search your program's help file for "Fill" or "Color" to learn how to do this. Vector graphics also allow you to enlarge your shoe's polygon shapes without degrading image quality. The fact that vectors are stored as drawing instructions, rather than pixel data, makes this possible.
Instructions
-
Inkscape
-
1
Open Inkscape, then click the "File" menu's "Open" command. Navigate to and double click the file containing the line drawing of the shoe to load that graphic into the program. Click the pen icon from the toolbar to run the tool for creating polygon shapes.
-
2
Click one of the lines of the shoe graphic, then drag the mouse to another place on the line and click again. For example, click on the outline of the shoe's tongue, which is between the flaps with the holes for the shoelaces. Drag the mouse to a different portion of the outline and click again. This creates one edge of a polygon.

-
3
Continue creating points and edges of the first polygon until you reach the first point you made in the polygon. Click that point to close and complete the polygon.
-
4
Create polygons for the remaining lines in the shoe's line drawing, as you did the first line. Save the polygons to a vector file by clicking the "File" menu's "Save" command.
Illustrator
-
5
Click the "File" menu's "Open" command, then navigate to and double click a file with a line drawing of a shoe to load that file into the program.
-
6
Click the "Live trace" button, then click the "Expand" button to convert all lines in the shoe to shapes.
-
7
Click the "File" menu's "Save" item to save the shapes to a shape polygon file.
Google Docs
-
8
Click the "Create" button on the Google Docs homepage, then click "Drawing." Click the "Insert" tab, then click the "Image" item. Navigate to and double click the shoe file on your hard drive to load it into Google Docs.
-
9
Click the toolbar icon, shaped like a wide arrow pointing to the left, to run the "Polyline" tool. Click a line on the shoe drawing, then drag to another point and click again. Continue creating edges and points of the polyline by clicking the mouse, until you've clicked the first point you made. This action closes the polyline to form a shape.
-
10
Create shapes for the remaining lines in the line drawing of the shoe, then click the "File" menu's "Save" command to save the drawing as a shape polygon file.
