How to Assemble Glass Separators
Whether you want to make divisions in a room or just enhance your decor, you can install glass panels as separators. Such dividers must be supported by wood or metal rails that hold the fragile glass in place. To prevent potential injury, 3/4-inch-thick tempered glass is recommended, because it's less likely to break. Thicker glass also provides greater sound deflection -- blocking the sound waves somewhat as they travel across the room.
Things You'll Need
- Glass-holding rails or posts
- 3/8-inch tempered glass
- Pencil
- Power drill
- Drill bit
- Carbide drill bit (optional)
- Epoxy
- Brush
- Mounting screws
- Screwdriver
- Mounting bolts
- Nuts
- Rubber bumpers
Instructions

1
Place the rails or posts on the desired surface. Place a level on top to ensure they are even. The weight of inadvertently tilted glass places unnecessary stress on it, and can cause it to break or crack over time.
-
2
Insert a pencil into the mount holes on the rails. Make dots on the desired surface to mark the spots to drill. Glass-holding rails have pre-drilled holes on the inside or outside.

3
Drill pilot holes on the marked dots using a power drill and drill bit. The diameters of the pilot holes should be 1/8-inch smaller than that of the actual mount holes. For metal surfaces, use a carbide drill bit to penetrate through the metal without damaging the drill.
-
4
Brush epoxy on the bottom edge of the rails, and place them over the desired surface. Line up the mount holes with the pilot holes, and press down on the rails. Let the epoxy dry for 30 minutes.
-
5
Insert the mounting screws into the mount and pilot holes. Tighten the screws using a screwdriver, to secure the rails to the desired surface.
-
6
Slide the bottom of the tempered glass through the indentation in the middle of the installed rails. If the rails have mount holes in the side walls, line the mount holes on the rails with the mount holes on the bottom edge of the glass.
-
7
Insert mounting bolts into the side walls and through the glass. Insert rubber bumpers between the glass and bolts on both sides of the glass. Screw the opposite sides of the bolts with nuts, to secure the glass to the side walls of the rails.
