How to Change the Transmission Oil in a 2008 Altima

The 2008 Nissan Altima base model was designed with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and a constant velocity transmission (CVT). The CVT is designed to constantly change gear ratios during driving, essentially making the process of shifting a thing of the past. According to Nissan TSB number 08-049B, the transmission fluid must be replaced with Nissan CVT fluid NS2 part number 999MP-NS200P or any warranty on the transmission will be void.

Instructions

    • 1

Lift the vehicle into the air with the floor jack. Place the jack stands under the front frame rails of the vehicle and lower the floor jack until the vehicle rests securely on the jack stands.

    • 2

Put on the safety glasses. Place the drain pan under the transmission pan.

    • 3

Locate the transmission pan drain bolt in the middle of the drain pan and loosen it with the socket and ratchet. Remove the drain plug with the 10 mm Allen wrench socket and allow the fluid to drain until fluid no longer drips from the drain hole.

    • 4

Install the transmission pan drain bolt and tighten it snugly. Remove the drain pan.

    • 5

Lift the vehicle hood and support it with the hood prop rod. Remove the transmission dip stick and insert a funnel into the dip stick tube.

    • 6

Pour four quarts of Nissan 999MP-NS200P CVT fluid into the transmission. Start the vehicle and cycle through the gears slowly. Return the shifter to park and check the transmission fluid level. Add transmission fluid as necessary until the dipstick reads full.

    • 7

Start the vehicle again and cycle through the gears. Check the transmission fluid one last time to ensure the fluid level is still on full and shut off the vehicle. Inspect under the vehicle for any leaks.

    • 8

Lift the vehicle off of the jack stands with the floor jack and remove the jack stands. Lower the vehicle to the ground.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most auto parts stores will dispose of used oil and transmission fluids free of charge

  • The CVT transmission is very sensitive, and if the vehicle is driven when the fluid level is not within operating range, damage may occur.

  • Do not use regular transmission fluid in the CVT transmission or the transmission will fail.
