How to Improve Yahoo! Deliverability

Check addresses before you send your email.

Having an important email bounce back to your email service as undeliverable or having an email automatically go into someone's Yahoo! spam folder is more than a minor annoyance. It could mean that a prospective employer doesn't get your resume or that a customer doesn't receive a product email, stunting your growth in both scenarios. Yahoo! Mail has protections in place to stop the arrival of spam email. To increase email deliverability, take care to be accurate when typing email addresses and avoiding some of the telltale signs of spam.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the email addresses in the recipient field. Some common mistakes are forgetting the "@" symbol between the address and the domain, forgetting the ".com" at the end of the email and even generally misspelling addresses. By taking your time to verify the email addresses for accuracy ahead of time, your email is much more likely to be delivered properly to a Yahoo! recipient.

    • 2

Contact those on your email list to get their latest addresses. Email addresses often become outdated and unused over time, so if you're emailing someone you haven't contacted in a long period of time, there's a chance her email address is no longer in service. Make a quick phone call to be sure.

    • 3

Give your email message the right subject line. Yahoo! works to keep spam messages out of user inboxes by detecting spam-like subjects and email content ahead of time. If you use excessive exclamation marks, write the entire subject line in caps or leave out the subject line altogether, you have a higher likelihood of being flagged as spam. Ensure that your subject line is properly formatted and relevant to the email body.

    • 4

Fill your email with relevant content and text. Sending only graphics in your email could be seen as advertorial, which has a higher likelihood of being flagged than a regular, informational text email. Prevent your emails from being flagged as spam by Yahoo! users by sending what your recipients expect, avoiding unsolicited messages.

    • 5

Add an "Unsubscribe" link to the bottom of your emails if you email for business or marketing purposes. When someone requests to be unsubscribed from your mailing list, do so promptly or risk being reported as a spammer and losing access to sending emails to Yahoo! users at all.

Register for Yahoo!'s Complaint Feedback Loop, especially if you send a large volume of emails. When using the Feedback Loop, you'll receive a notification any time a Yahoo! user flags your message as spam. This gives you better insight into what is and isn't working when it comes to marketing materials and other messages so you can alter them for better deliverability in the future. To register with Complaint Feedback Loop, you must sign your outbound emails using DomainKeys and/or DKIM.
