How to Adjust Hydrostatic Cable on John Deere F525

The deck of the John Deere F525 mower is located at the front of the vehicle. Its hydrostatic transmission uses hydraulics to drive the mower, rather than belts and gears. Inside the transmission is a hydraulic motor and pump; the transmission generates pressure and pushes fluid to the engine, which turns the wheels. The only cable that periodically needs adjusting is the speed-control cable. After you access the cable, it is not difficult to adjust; however, you will need to remove some components to gain access to it. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Raise the back of the John Deere F525 with a jack and slide jack stands under the frame of the mower. Lower the F525 until the frame rests securely on the jack stands. Lower the mower deck to its lowest position. Push the seat forward and remove the engine cover.

    • 2

Move the engine throttle to the "r" label. Push the speed-control levers until they lock in position. Push the levers 1 inch forward and see if the drive wheel will turn. Locate the cable that runs from the speed controls to the engine plate.

    • 3

Loosen the nut that attaches the cable to the engine and transmission. Unscrew any cable clips or brackets that hold the cable in place. Turn the nuts on either side of the transmission cable until they are both loose. Turn the adjustment bolt in a clockwise position, tightening the cable.

    • 4

Tighten the adjusting nuts on either side of the adjustment bolt. Screw down any cable clips or brackets. Retighten the adjustment nut that attaches the cable to the engine and transmission. Lift the back of the John Deere F525 and remove the jack stands. Lower the back of the mower until the drive wheel is back on the ground. Replace the engine cover over the engine and secure it in place. Raise the mower deck and start the engine.

Tips & Warnings

  • Moving the control levers forward 1 inch determines whether the transmission cable needs adjustment.

  • If the drive wheel turns when you push the control lever forward after locking it in position, the cable requires adjustment.

  • Always work on the John Deere F525 in a well ventilated area. Even with the engine off, exhaust fumes can make you sick.

  • Do not work under the mower without the F525 being supported off the ground and secured in place.
