Convert Microsoft Reader files to Mobipocket format to read in devices such as the Amazon Kindle.

In August of 2011, Microsoft announced the discontinuation of Microsoft Reader, the Windows-based e-Book reader program compatible with .LIT files. Although you have several other possible ways to read e-Books, including Mobipocket Reader for Windows-based systems and Mobipocket-compatible e-Book readers such as the Amazon Kindle, those with large Microsoft Reader libraries will need to first convert their .LIT files before reading the e-Books on their new programs or devices.

You can choose between two ways to convert .LIT files. The first method uses an online conversion service, which is simple but offers little in the way of conversion options. The second method uses a program called Calibre, which has an array of formatting and layout options as well as presets for specific devices.

Instructions

  1. Online Conversion Service

    • 1

Open your Internet browser and load an online conversion site. Online-Convert.com and Convert.Files are two conversion services that support .LIT and .MOBI files.

    • 2

Click the “Browse…” button, locate your .LIT file and click “Open.”

    • 3

Select “Mobipocket e-book” from the output format menu, if applicable. On some conversion service sites, you can also select a target e-Book device; selecting your device will format the e-Book layout to better fit the device screen.

    • 4

Click the “Convert” button and download the processed file when the conversion is complete.

    Calibre

    • 5

Launch Calibre and click the “Add books” button. Browse to the .LIT file, select it and click “Open.” You can also drag and drop .LIT files directly into the Calibre window to add it to the library.

    • 6

Select the e-Book from the Calibre library panel and click “Convert books.” You can also select multiple books to convert at once.

    • 7

Select “MOBI” from the “Output format” menu on the top-right corner of the conversion window.

    • 8

Click the “Look & Feel” option in the left panel. Adjust the formatting options for the conversion process in this window. You can change the default font size, the paragraph spacing, indent spacing and text justification.

    • 9

Click the “Page Setup” option in the left panel. Select “Mobipocket Books” in the “Output profile” panel if you will be using the file with Mobipocket Reader. If you are using a Kindle, select the appropriate Kindle model from the panel.
