How to Get Water Circulating in My New Yorker Gas Boiler
Gas boilers by the New Yorker Boiler Company feature a cast iron heat exchanger and an automatic ignition system to operate and heat the household water. However, if the water is not circulating through the New Yorker boiler, some investigation into the issue is necessary in order to identify if you can solve the problem or if technical service from the company is needed. 1
Open the front access panel on the New Yorker boiler and look to make sure the rear of the burners are inserted into the vertical slots on the back of the burner and that the burner front edges are sitting completely over the burner orifice. Adjust if necessary after disconnecting power and allowing the boiler to cool.
-
2
Close the isolation valve on the boiler supply pipe and close the zone valves, as well.
-
-
3
Connect a hose to the bib, which is just underneath the isolation valve and place the other end of the hose in a 5-gallon bucket.
-
4
Open one zone valve and open the hose bib, followed by the fill valve. Let the water flow into the bucket until there are no bubbles -- for at least 30 seconds.
-
5
Open the next zone valve and then close the first zone valve. Repeat along all zones, leaving one zone open at all times. Finish by opening all of the zone valves.
-
6
Close the hose bib and allow the water system to keep filling until the pressure gauge is at 12 psi, and then close the fill valve. Open the isolation valve and remove the hose from the boiler unit.

7
Adjust the room thermostat to the lowest setting and make sure the vent damper is open. Turn the main power to “Off” and turn the gas control knob “Off” until the knob is resting against the stop. Wait five minutes for the gas to clear the lines, and stop to smell for gas. If there is no gas scent, turn the gas control knob counterclockwise to “On” until the knob rests against the stop opposite from the “Off” position. Restore power to the New Yorker boiler and set the thermostat to the appropriate temperature point.
