How to Build MDF Bookshelves
MDF, or medium-density fiberboard, is an excellent material for building bookshelves, due to its attractive appearance and relative strength. This material is easily painted and easy to work with. MDF is best attached with metal brackets to increase the strength of the connections. This process can be completed with basic tools and a limited experience with MDF or basic carpentry. The bookcase can be adjusted as needed for depth and length of shelves and overall width and height . Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- 2 MDF sheets, 3/4-by-12-by-50-inch
- 2 MDF sheets, 3/4-by-12-by-24-inch
- Drill
- Wood drill bits
- Wood screws, 3/4-inch
- Metal L-brackets, 1-inch
- MDF sheet, 3/4-by-24-by-51 1/2-inch
- MDF sheets, 3/4-by-12-by-22 1/2-inch
- Carpentry level

Set two 3/4-by-12-by-50-inch MDF sheets on their long, thin sides on the working surface to be the side boards. Have an assistant hold them parallel to each other about 22 inches apart. Set a 3/4-by-12-by-24-inch MDF sheet against their ends to be the top board and arrange the boards so they are even with each other.

Set 1-inch metal L-brackets on the inside of the boards, spaced every six inches between each joint. Mark the screw holes and drill them out, making sure not to go through to the other side of the MDF. Attach the metal L-brackets to the MDF with 3/4-inch wood screws. Repeat on the other end to install an identical bottom board.

Lower a 3/4-by-24-by-51 1/2-inch MDF board onto the ground to be the rear board. Place the assembled frame on top of it evenly. Set 1-inch metal L-brackets every 12 inches around the inside of the frame where it comes in contact with the rear board. Drill out each bracket hole and attach them with 3/4-inch wood screws.

Stand the bookcase upright and position a 3/4-by-12-by-22 1/2-inch board within the frame at a desired shelf position. Place the carpenter's level on top of it to make the shelf straight. Set 1-inch metal L-brackets underneath the shelf, spaced every six inches against the rear and side boards. Drill out the holes for the bracket and attach them in place with 3/4-inch wood screws. Repeat as needed to add additional shelving.

Tips & Warnings
Attach the MDF bookcase to the wall for additional stability by drilling a 3-inch wood screw through the top of the rear board and into a wall stud, preventing accidental falls.
Do not climb the bookcase or pull it forward.
