Consider using different colors, such as pink or white, when designing your box.

There are a few symbols synonymous with Valentine's Day. Thoughts of hearts, cupid and of course, roses, come to mind. One craft idea matches one of the symbols, roses, with a tradition often carried out in elementary and grammar schools: passing out valentines. Using a shoe box, create a decorative box where kids can place and store the Valentine's Day cards they receive.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Cut out the rose petal printout using your scissors. The rose petal printout should be big enough that a valentine will fit inside of the boundaries of the rose picture. Ultimately, this shape is cut from the box and valentines are inserted.

    • 2

Attach the rose petal printout to the very center of your construction paper using craft glue or double-sided tape. This part will be discarded, so don't worry about the glue being completely dry.

    • 3

Attach the construction paper to the top of lid of the shoe box with the rose petal image resting squarely in the center. Use glue or double-sided tape to secure the construction paper both on top and on the underside of the box lid.

    • 4

Poke a hole along the border of the rose petal image on the shoe box lid using your scissors. Cut around the entire outline of the rose petal image, being sure to cut all the way through the cardboard. After you cut out the image, discard the rose petal template and underlying construction paper and cardboard. Set the lid aside.

    • 5

Glue or tape two pieces of construction paper together on the longer sides with about one-inch overlap.

    • 6

Rest the bottom of the shoe box on top of the construction paper so the seam that you just glued is in the center. You'll notice the excess construction paper sticks out from all sides. Fold the construction paper into the box and attach the excess using glue or double sided tape on the inside walls of the shoe box.

    • 7

Place the lid onto the bottom of the shoe box to complete.

Tips & Warnings

  • Instead of construction paper, consider using wrapping paper or fabric such as felt for the exterior of your box.

  • Use other materials such as markers, glitter, yarn and stickers to decorate the outside of the box.
