Headband and Wrap Craft

Use ribbons to make a headband and head wrap.

Make a homemade headband and head wrap craft with a bit of extra ribbon. In place of ribbon, use a 1- or 2-inch wide strip of fabric, hemmed on all sides. The wide section of ribbon will wrap around the top and sides of your head, whereas the thin 1/4-inch wide segments of ribbon will be used as ties for securing the headband at the nape of your neck. It will look like a headband when your hair is down and it will look like a head wrap when you wear your hair in an up-do.

Things You'll Need

• Scissors
• 1-inch wide ribbon
• 1/4-inch wide ribbon
• Sewing needle
• Thread

Instructions

1. Cut a 12-inch length of 1-inch wide ribbon. Cut the ends straight across, not at an angle as is often customary with ribbon.

2. Cut two 8-inch lengths of the narrower 1/4-inch wide ribbon. Cut the ribbons straight across.

3. Fold under the ends of the 1-inch wide length of ribbon. Hand-sew a mini-hem at each end of the wide ribbon using a needle and thread. Use a vertical hemming stitch.

4. Hand-sew the thin strips of ribbon to the ends of the wide section of ribbon. Use a basting stitch. Sew the end of each narrow ribbon to the underside of the wide ribbon.

5. Cut the loose ends of the narrow ribbons at a 45-degree angle to prevent fraying.

Tips & Warnings

• Satin ribbon can be slippery and difficult to work with. Satin ribbon is not recommended for the two narrow sections of ribbon that will serve as ties.

• Decorate a plain ribbon with appliques, embroidery, silk flowers or sew-on beads or buttons.

• The aforementioned ribbon widths are recommendations. Use narrower or wider ribbon if desired. The ties should be narrower than the section of ribbon that will go over the top of your head.

• Alternatively, skip the ties and sew a segment of elastic between the ends of the wide section of ribbon. The length of the elastic will vary according to the size of your head. There are some disadvantages associated with using elastic. It will stretch out with time and it will not be adjustable.

• Use a strip of fabric with finished edges in place of the wide ribbon to make a head wrap that will match your outfit.
