Prayer shawls allow Jewish women to show reverence to God.

As a Jewish tradition, people often wear prayer shawls during services. A prayer shawl is a rectangular piece of cloth with a tzitzit attached to the four corners. It is used to show respect to God as it provides a garment for prayer. However, even though women are now permitted to use prayer shawls, they should not be used as replacements for usual head covering. There needs to be a barrier between the woman and the garment. As prayer shawls can be very essential in a Jewish woman's life, it is important that they are the right sizes. With a few items, decide on an ideal length and cut a prayer shawl to fit your body size.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on the desired length of the shawl and sew along that measurement.

    • 2

Cut approximately 10 inches away from the stitching, unravel and then trim to the corresponding length.

    • 3

Examine the opposite side and see if it is even. Repeat previous steps to the opposite side to ensure that both ends match in length. Be sure that you cut evenly on both ends so the shawl does not become too short in size.

    • 4

Wear the shawl to see if it is an appropriate size for you. Place your back in front of a full body mirror and look into a small mirror to get a good view of the back of the shawl.
