How to Make a Teddy Bear Out of a Knitting Knobby
Create a new heirloom or a cherished stuffed toy by making a teddy bear out of a knitting knobby, which is also known as french knitting or spool knitting. Pegs surround a small circular frame creating a simple loom for knitting. Excellent for beginners, the knitting knobby forms long strands of knitting that can be folded and twisted into a teddy bear. Any color and gauge of wool yarn is suitable for the project, and a crochet hook is useful for forming the knitted stitches.

Knitting Knobby
-
1
Thread the end of the wool yarn through the top of the knitting knobby to create a 6-inch tail under it. Knitting knobbies look like spools and are hollow in the center.
-
2
Wrap the yarn at the top of the knitting knobby around one peg counterclockwise. Wind the peg to the left of the first peg counterclockwise. Repeat wrapping each peg to the left until all are looped. This is called casting on.

-
3
Wind the yarn around the first peg again in a counterclockwise fashion. Hook the bottom loop over the top loop and over the peg using a Size 2 crochet hook. Wrap the peg to the left, counterclockwise. Hook the bottom loop over the top loop and over the peg. The braid-like knitting forms at the bottom of the knitting knobby.

Repeat the knitting until you have a strand that is 20 inches long to form the body of the bear. Cast off the strand by cutting the yarn approximately 6 inches away from the spool with scissors. Thread the end of the yarn through each last loop. Remove the knitting from the knitting knobby and pull the end of the yarn to tighten.
-
5
Knit a 4-inch and a 5-inch-long strand with the knitting knobby. These strands create the bear's arms and legs.

Fold the 20-inch-long knitting strand in half lengthwise to work on the teddy bear's head and body. Cut a 4-inch piece of yarn. Wrap it around the folded area approximately 2 inches away from the fold to make the head. Tie a double knot, leaving the strand ends below.
-
7
Loop each strand end, bringing the ends up to the bear's head. Tie the yarn ends around the neck area. You now have two open loops and a bear's head on top.
-
8
Place the strands for the arms and legs so they are evenly spaced in the loops. Insert the 4-inch knitted strand into the top of the loops for the arms. Push the 5-inch knitted strand through the bottom part of the loops for the legs.
-
9
Thread your sewing needle with thread that is the same color as the knitted yarn. Tie a knot at the ends of the thread. Sew a running stitch down the sides of the teddy bear's head to close.
-
10
Sew the left side of the bear to close the open loop and to secure the left arm and leg in place. Sew the right side of the bear closed and secure the right arm and leg. Tie a knot and cut off the excess thread. Cut off any excess yarn ends.

Tips & Warnings
Pinch out the ears and secure them by sewing around them.
Sew embroidery floss onto the bear to add eyes, a nose and mouth.
Felt the bear by washing it at a high temperature in the washing machine. Shape it after the washing and allow it to air dry.
