How to Repair & Refurbish a Canon MP500 Purge Unit
Most printers come with a purge unit to ensure long-lasting quality prints. A purge unit cleans the print heads inside of a printer and also serves as a resting place for the print heads. Purge units can be very sensitive to an accumulation of ink or other debris, such as torn paper or small objects. Within Canon's MP500 series of printers, it can be challenging to repair the purge unit so that the printer continues to function as designed.

1
Open the cover of the printer while the printer is still plugged in. Let the head come to the center.
-
2
Disconnect the power cord. Now you can freely move the head to the far left and out of your way. The purge unit is on the right, and there are two ink pads on top of it where the print head is normally parked. There also will be a wiper blade that wipes the printer head when it returns to this spot.

3
Press the ink pads down gently, but only a tiny amount. If misaligned, this should put it back into alignment so that the print head parks correctly. If necessary, gently adjust the wiper blade so that it lines up properly as well.
-
4
Inspect the area around the purge unit for any small objects. If there was a recent paper jam, a small fragment of paper could be obstructing the purge unit from operating correctly. Use the flashlight and magnifying glass to see if any minute items have gotten stuck.

Tips & Warnings
There will be very little space inside the printer to deal with the purge unit. Move slowly when tinkering inside of the machine or further damage could be done.
Wear gloves so that you do not get ink or any other chemicals onto bare skin.
