Crochet Popcorn & Filigree Stitch Butterfly Square Instructions
Crocheted popcorn stitches, filigree edging, and a butterfly appliqué sewn in the middle make this square a delightful change of pace from a traditional granny square. Make one square as a wall hanging, several for a pillowcase, or dozens for an afghan. Use your imagination when choosing yarn and butterfly colors, since the more colorful you make these squares, the more unusual and interesting they'll be.

Chain 23. For the first row, work a single crochet stitch in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across. For the second row, chain four and skip one stitch. In the following stitch, work five double crochets, take the needle out of the loop, put it through the first double crochet and back in the loop, and pull the yarn through. This is one popcorn stitch. Chain one, skip a stitch, and work a popcorn stitch in the next stitch. Repeat this pattern across, ending with one chain and a double crochet in the last stitch. For the third row, chain one and single crochet in each stitch across. For the following rows, repeat rows two and three until the square measures approximately 8 inches.

Work a single crochet in the corner stitch and chain three, starting the filigree edging. Skip two stitches and single crochet in the next stitch. Continue this way around the square, finishing with a slip stitch in the first single crochet. Work slip stitches to the middle chain of the first loop, and work a single crochet in the loop. Chain three, single crochet in the next loop, and continue around the square. Work two more edging rows in this way, ending with a slip stitch in the first single crochet. Cut the yarn and pull through the loop to finish off. Work the end of the yarn into the stitches.

Center the butterfly appliqué in the center of the square. Pull the thread through with the needle up through the appliqué and back down, knotting the thread at the back of the square. Make several more stitches at the middle of the butterfly until it is securely attached to the crocheted square. Finish by pulling the thread to the back, knotting it against the square, and cutting it off.

Tips & Warnings
To connect squares for a pillowcase, purse or afghan, use a large tapestry needle and the crochet yarn, attaching the loops of each square to each other.
Choose a yarn color that either matches or contrasts with the butterfly.
