Troubleshooting Miller Oil Furnace Model FS-LS
The Miller FS-LS oil furnace requires oil line piping and should be installed as close to the chimney as possible for proper ventilation, with a clearance of 24 inches at the front and rear of the unit. The oil furnace also requires regular cleaning, inspection and service in order to run properly, which generally should be performed by a authorized service professional. Some minor problems with the oil furnace, however, can be fixed by the owner through troubleshooting. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Inspect the oil tank on the furnace if the unit is not heating as expected and turn the oil valve all the way to the “Open” setting. Verify that the electrical cord is plugged into a live outlet if there is no power and reset or replace the fuse or circuit breaker as needed.
-
2
Turn the thermostat above room temperature and set the mode to “Heat” if there is oil and power to the furnace but the furnace is not running.
-
-
3
Open the access panel on the furnace and press the “Thermal Protector” button if the burner is not running. Wait for the furnace to automatically restart.
-
4
Locate the burner safety switch primary control inside the access panel near the burner and reset the switch if the furnace has oil, power and the burner is running but there is no heat. Contact Miller for assistance if this does not resolve the problem.
-
5
Disconnect power to the furnace and clean the oil valve electrodes with a clean, dry cloth if the burner will not create a flame. Clean out the oil nozzle with a clean, dry cloth and pull out the strainer from the oil pump. Clean the strainer with soapy water and rinse it thoroughly. Air-dry the strainer before returning it to the furnace. Clean the strainer if the pump is squealing during use.
-
6
Find any kinks or strains on the furnace cable or conduits where the cable or hardware is too tight if there is a chattering or high-pitched sound coming from the furnace. Loosen the hardware or cable connection slightly with a screwdriver or adjustable pliers to reduce the noise.
-
7
Contact a qualified service professional if the burner flame is too low, the basement tank is humming or the flame is excessive or pulsating. These are all issues that should be corrected by a professional familiar with oil furnace repair.
