Making Cool Baby Onesies With Patched Letters

Making Cool Baby Onesies With Patched Letters thumbnail
Create custom infant bodysuits using basic craft supplies.

Baby Onesies that are customized with an applique latch are both decorative and functional but often are costly when purchased from a baby boutique or specialty shop. You can save money by purchasing plain, solid-colored infant bodysuits from a baby superstore and applying a patch letter yourself using inexpensive arts and crafts supplies.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut out a letter that measures approximately 3 inches wide and 4 inches long from decorative fabric to use as a patch.

    • 2

Fold the edges of the patch letter over by 1/4 inch around the perimeter. Snip the edge by 1/4 inch around curves before folding to allow the curves to fold correctly. Snip 1/8 inch off of the tips of any corners to enable the corners to fold properly.

    • 3

Iron the folded patch letter to press the folds flat.

    • 4

Place the letter onto the front of an infant bodysuit, then pin around the edges to secure it in place using straight pins.

    • 5

Stitch around the pinned edge using small stitches and thread that matches the colors in the fabric of the letter. Remove the straight pins.

    • 6

Trim off any excess thread with scissors.

Tips & Warnings

  • Turn the bodysuit with the patched letter inside out before washing it.

  • Make sure to remove any straight pins before putting the bodysuit on your child.
