How to Get Green Silly String Stains Off a White Car

Celebratory events such as a sports game, graduation, wedding, birthday or holiday sometimes inspire friends to decorate your vehicle with fun things like Silly String. Fun for them because it’s easy to apply, but not so much fun for you because you’re stuck with cleaning it off. Green Silly String on a white car creates green or yellow-looking stains that seem impossible to remove. They aren't, however; you can get them off within an hour.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the car or at least the stained areas. Use a sponge to scrub the stains to remove as much color as possible. Rinse the car and let it dry completely.

    • 2

Spray the detailer directly over the stains. Place the clay bar on the surface and rub it back and forth across the stains, parallel with the ground. Keep the surface wet with the detailer to keep the clay bar from sticking to the surface.

    • 3

Fold the clay bar and spray more detailer onto the surface. Fold the clay bar as many times as needed to keep a clean side of the bar in contact with the surface. Rub until the Silly String stains are gone, or until you’ve concentrated on one area for at least five minutes.

    • 4

Check the stains to see if the clay bar is working to remove them. If the stains are not visible, spray more detailer spray over the area and quickly buff it dry with a microfiber towel. If the stains are visible, move to the next step.

    • 5

Apply a dime-size amount of light rubbing compound onto a cotton towel. Apply the compound to the stains by working it over the surface in small, circular motions. Rub just enough to remove the stains from the car. Move to the next area.

    • 6

Use the compound on all of the stains until they are gone. Buff the compound with a dry microfiber towel to make the area shine again, since the compound makes the paint appear dull. Spray some detailer over the area and buff it with a microfiber cloth.
