How to Convert Google Maps to the GPX Plugin

How to Convert Google Maps to the GPX Plugin thumbnail
You can convert Google Maps to a GPX file for GPS devices.

GPX files are used by GPS devices and software to provide information on a map, such as driving directions or way points. Google Maps doesn't have an export option for GPX files. If you have Google Maps files that you want to use with a GPS device or other mapping software, you can convert the map to a GPX file and then open that file in the other application. You have two good options for converting the files: GPS Visualizer and GMapToGPX.

Instructions

  1. GPS Visualizer

    • 1

Create a map in Google Maps and then click "Save to My Maps."

    • 2

Click "My Places," "Maps" and the map you want to convert in Google Maps.

    • 3

Click "KML" to download a KML file, which has all of the geographic data on it, to your computer.

    • 4

Open the GPS Visualizer website on your computer by visiting http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert_input.

    • 5

Click the circle next to "GPX" to select it as the output method.

    • 6

Click "Choose File" and select the XML file that you downloaded to your computer.

    • 7

Click "Convert" to convert the file to GPX. A new screen appears with a text box of what appears in the GPX file.

    • 8

Right-click the "Click to Download..." link at the top of the page, select "Save As," enter a name for the file and click "OK." The GPX file is downloaded to your computer.

    GMapToGPX

    • 9

Navigate to the Communications From Elsewhere website at http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert_input and save the "GMapToGPX" link to your browser's toolbar. The bookmarklet was created to work with Firefox or Internet Explorer.

Open the Google Maps map that you want to convert to GPX and click the "GMaptoGPX" bookmarklet. The converted GPX file appears on the screen.

    • 11
