How to Fold a Cycling Tube

The common bicycle tire contains an internal rubber tube. The inner tube gives the tire definition, while providing a measure of cushion for the rider. Flats generally occur whenever a sharp object, such as a nail, penetrates the tire casing and punctures the inner tube. Keeping a spare tube on hand prepares the rider for these occasional misfortunes. Convenient storage of the inner tube requires first folding it into a compact and secure shape.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the cycling tube flat on a smooth patch of ground or tabletop. Avoid any surface that might abrade or puncture the tube.

    • 2

Remove the valve cap. If the tube contains a Presta valve, unscrew the locknut from the tip of the valve. This type of valve, typically found on performance-oriented bikes, contains an inner stem that threads in and out.

    • 3

Place the tip of your thumbnail against the stem at the center of the valve, and push down. Pushing the stem down opens the valve, allowing air to escape.

    • 4

Force the air inside the tube forward and out through the valve using your other hand.

    • 5

Fold the tube evenly toward the stem. While rolling the tube, depress the valve stem as needed to free any trapped air.

    • 6

Replace the valve cap, and wrap a rubber band tightly around the center of the tube. The rubber band prevents the tube from unfolding.

Tips & Warnings

  • Store the bicycle inner tube inside a plastic sandwich bag, along with a set of tire levers. These levers allow for removal of the old tube from the tire. The bag helps protect the inner tube, while keeping it conveniently paired with the levers.
